A fascinating look at this much-loved street and area of Widcombe.
Church Street is known for Widcombe Manor and St Thomas a Becket - but so much more lies half-hidden. Where was Mount Pleasant? Where was the New Inn, the Hare and Hounds, and Parson's Orchard? Did Sarah Fielding really live here? And who was a burkite, cut-purse knave? This talk and guided walk will explore what history lies hidden under the houses you see today and what traces still remain, who built them and who lived in them.
The walk will be hosted by Tony Coverdale and Dan Lyons, but all credit for the extensive research which lies behind it goes to the late John Chambers who loved Church Street and knew more about its history than anyone else.
The walk is on Sunday 6th April at 2.00pm.
